Conrail 6567, a General Electric C30-7A, leads a drag freight past the Worcester Union Station on a cold Christmas Eve night. The Boston and Albany Railroad built the first Worcester Union Station in 1875. For 84 years Union Station was the tallest structure in Worcester, however, the station towers were torn down in 1926 due toweakening caused by the vibration of passing trains. The original Union Station was torn down in 1959 to make room for the construction of the I-290 freeway. A new Union Station was built between 1909-1911 next to the original Union Station and remained open until 1972. It was called “The Million Dollar Station” and was the second largest station in New England, second only to the Old South Station in Boston. The station has been renovated into a retail mall. |

| The Boston and Albany Railroad was leased to the New York Central Railroad in 1900 and subsequent track renovations were done to improve capacity on the route, including double tracking the entire line. The New York Central eventually merged with the Pennsylvania Railroad to form the Penn Central. When the Penn Central went bankrupt, the Conrail Railroad was formed and supported by the US Government. Conrail eventually became a profitable railroad and was divided between the CSX and the Norfolk Southern Railroad on July 1, 1999. Conrail 6567 is now part of the Norfolk Southern diesel locomotive fleet while the original Boston and Albany railroad line is part of the CSX Transportation network. |
